MAHJONG

Self Care & Regulation in a Timeless Game

WHAT IS MAHJONG?

Mahjong is a centuries-old Chinese tile game that blends strategy, skill, memory, and mindfulness. Played with a set of 144 beautifully designed tiles, the goal is to create winning combinations — much like rummy, but with a rhythmic, meditative flow all its own.

Traditionally played in groups of four, Mahjong is as much about connection and conversation as it is about competition. The clack of the tiles, the laughter between rounds, and the shared focus around the table make it a grounding and joyful experience. At its core, Mahjong is about connection — to ourselves, to others, and to the present moment.

MAHJONG + MENTAL HEALTH

The Collective team has always been open to non-traditional ways to engage in mental wellness. Lara began playing Mahjong in a session with a client, opening the door to a peaceful space to opening up. What started as alternative path for one person turned into a community using this ancient game for grounding, connection, and healing.

In 2025, Lara founded The Sparrow Social Society, a Mahjong club in Huntsville with this mental health mission in mind. Whether you're new to the game or a seasoned player, there's a seat for you.

At The Sparrow, mental wellness is not a separate conversation. It’s thoughtfully woven into every gathering. Every member is encouraged to invest in themselves, to prioritize their health, and to show up fully.
